Samsara launched a new service aimed at helping carriers identify areas for improvement by revealing industry benchmarks, the company announced April 6.

The Fleet Benchmarks Report was created to help carriers better understand their performance in context to other trucking companies. That way they can set informed goals to improve performance. Samsara uses machine learning algorithms to review data from its customers.

“Our customers are in a unique position to unlock powerful insights from their data given the industries and environments they operate in,” Ali Akhtar, head of big data and machine learning at Samara, said in a statement provided to Transport Topics. “But they often face challenges such as insufficient data, siloed systems and slow time-to-insights.”

Samsara leverages a dataset from the over 20,000 customers using its platform to create the customized report. From that data each individualized report compares how a carrier is doing against industry key performance metrics like safety, speeding and idle time.

“For example, while a fleet may have an idling rate that appears high, the Fleet Benchmarks Report may reveal that they’re actually performing in the top 10% of their peer group, meaning they have a relatively low idling rate,” Akhtar said. “Because of this contextualized data, this fleet can make a more informed decision to prioritize another operational program, like improving safety, rather than reducing the idling rate.” — Transport Topics
